Diabetes continues to be a rising health concern in the UK, but experts suggest that small adjustments to diet can significantly reduce the risk of the disease.

Physician Dr. Terry Shintani recently took to TikTok to emphasize the importance of certain carbohydrates in preventing diabetes. According to Dr. Shintani, many people mistakenly believe that only complex carbohydrates are healthy, while simple carbs should be avoided at all costs. He aimed to debunk this myth.

“Let me clear up a misconception that the best carbs are always complex carbs, and that simple carbs are always bad for you,” Dr. Shintani stated.

He explained the difference between simple and complex carbohydrates. Simple carbs, such as sucrose (table sugar) or fructose, consist of one or two sugar molecules. In contrast, complex carbs, found in foods like potatoes and bread, are made up of long chains of sugar molecules, ranging from dozens to thousands.

Dr. Shintani also pointed out that some fruits, including apples, contain coloured pigments that may play a protective role against diabetes. While more research is needed, he suggests that incorporating these foods into a balanced diet could help prevent or delay diabetes-related complications.

This advice highlights the importance of making informed dietary choices, particularly for those at risk of diabetes. By understanding which foods to prioritize, people can take control of their health and potentially reduce the impact of the disease.
