Are Weight-Loss Drugs Like Ozempic and Wegovy Safe?

The use of GLP-1 drugs, commonly prescribed for weight loss, has surged in the U.S. in recent years. According to a FAIR Health report, prescriptions for these drugs among adults rose from less than 1% in 2019 to 4% in 2024. At the same time, diagnoses of overweight and obesity increased from 10.4% to 15.7%.

Medications like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro fall into this category, raising questions about their safety and effectiveness.

Safe When Properly Prescribed

Shawnda Dorantes, a certified family nurse practitioner based in San Marcos, California, emphasized that these medications are safe when used under medical supervision.

“These medications are only prescribed when we believe they’re appropriate, and we monitor patients closely throughout their treatment,” Dorantes said. “When used responsibly, they can be powerful tools for long-term health and wellness.”

Dorantes runs a medical weight-loss program at her clinic, where patients undergo a thorough evaluation before starting treatment. Each case is tailored based on the patient’s health, medical history, and goals.

More Than Just Weight Loss

Originally developed to support weight loss, GLP-1 drugs have also shown additional health benefits. Medical professionals report improvements in blood sugar levels, blood pressure, cholesterol, and a reduced risk of heart disease and Type 2 diabetes. Dorantes noted that many patients also report better sleep and increased self-confidence.

Risks and Considerations

As with any medication, side effects are possible. Common complaints include nausea and constipation. Dorantes stressed the importance of medical oversight to assess and manage these risks.

“Weight-loss medications aren’t a magic fix, but they can be life-changing when paired with lifestyle changes,” she said. “We’ve seen people who’ve battled weight for decades finally make real progress.”

She called the growing accessibility of these medications a “new era in weight care,” helping patients regain both health and confidence.
