Two women are leading an initiative to raise awareness of diabetes by encouraging people to join an upcoming parkrun event.
Donna, a dietitian living with type 1 diabetes, and Karen, a respiratory nurse, are behind the event at Penallta parkrun on Saturday, June 21. The event is a collaboration between Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, Diabetes UK, and parkrun.
Their goal is to highlight the impact of diabetes, a condition affecting 8% of adults in Gwent. Left unmanaged, diabetes can lead to serious health complications, including disability and even death.
Donna, who oversees Community Dietetics at the Health Board, expressed her excitement: “I’m looking forward to completing the full parkrun at Penallta on June 21 to support Diabetes.”
Karen, who juggles her responsibilities as a grandmother and respiratory nurse, is also a regular volunteer at her local parkrun. She encouraged others to participate, saying, “I’d recommend everyone to visit their local parkrun—meet new people, get fitter, and live a healthier life.”
Professor Tracy Daszkiewicz, Director of Public Health for Gwent, praised the partnership, stating, “We are thrilled to work alongside Diabetes UK and parkrun to raise awareness about diabetes throughout Gwent.”
