People living with diabetes face a higher risk of severe illness from COVID-19 and should take extra precautions, according to the latest advice from Diabetes UK, based on updated government guidance.
A spokesperson from the charity said, “If you have diabetes, you are more vulnerable to serious outcomes from coronavirus. You should strictly follow social distancing rules, including reducing face-to-face contact with friends and family as much as possible.”
Key Social Distancing Measures to Reduce COVID-19 Risk:
- Avoid contact with anyone showing COVID-19 symptoms, such as a high fever or a new, continuous cough.
- Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, or use hand sanitiser frequently.
- Limit use of public transport. If travel is necessary, try to avoid peak hours.
- Work from home if possible. Employers are encouraged to support remote working—see gov.uk for official guidance.
- Stay away from large gatherings and avoid smaller public spaces like pubs, restaurants, cinemas, and clubs.
- Do not gather with friends or extended family. Stay connected through phone calls, video chats, and social media.
- Use telephone or online services to reach out to your GP or other essential services.
