Can Pneumonia Cause Hyperglycemia?

During acute illness, the body releases counterregulatory hormones such as cortisol, glucagon, and catecholamines as part of the stress response. These hormones antagonize the action of insulin, promoting glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis in the liver while inhibiting glucose uptake in muscle and adipose tissue. The net effect is elevated blood glucose levels, exacerbating hyperglycemia in individuals with diabetes.

Increased Energy Requirements:

Fighting infection requires energy, and the body may prioritize glucose utilization to meet heightened metabolic demands during pneumonia. This increased energy expenditure, coupled with impaired insulin action, can further elevate blood glucose levels in diabetic patients.

Fluid and Electrolyte Imbalance:

Pneumonia can lead to dehydration due to fever, respiratory distress, and decreased oral intake. Dehydration can exacerbate hyperglycemia by concentrating blood glucose levels. Healthcare providers should be vigilant for signs of hyperglycemia in individuals with pneumonia, as uncontrolled blood glucose levels can worsen outcomes and prolong recovery. Strategies to mitigate hyperglycemia in this population include:

Glucose Monitoring:

Regular monitoring of blood glucose levels is essential in hospitalized patients with pneumonia, especially those with pre-existing diabetes. Frequent monitoring allows for timely detection of hyperglycemia and adjustment of insulin or oral antidiabetic medications as needed.

Insulin Therapy:

Insulin therapy is the mainstay of treatment for hyperglycemia in hospitalized patients, including those with pneumonia. Intravenous insulin infusion protocols or subcutaneous insulin regimens may be employed to achieve glycemic targets safely. Antibiotic Therapy:
