National Diabetes Month: Raising Awareness and Promoting Healthy Living

What’s the 4 most common types of diabetes

As we observe National Diabetes Month this November, it’s an opportunity to raise awareness about diabetes and prediabetes. Diabetes is a chronic condition that affects how the body processes food and converts it into energy. There are three common types: Type 1, Type 2, and gestational diabetes, each of which impacts the body’s ability to produce or use insulin effectively.

For individuals with diabetes, managing blood sugar levels is crucial. If left undiagnosed or unmanaged, diabetes can lead to serious complications such as heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney failure, digestive issues, and more. The good news is that early detection and proper management can help prevent or delay these complications.

Support Available for Diabetes Management

To assist those affected, Group Health Insurance Program members and their spouses, who are not enrolled in a high-deductible health plan, may qualify for reduced pharmacy copays on diabetes medications through the Well Wisconsin Diabetes Management Coaching Program. This program offers personalized coaching to help individuals manage their diabetes effectively. To learn more and enroll, visit the “It’s Your Health: Diabetes” program.

In addition, individuals can take part in the National Diabetes Prevention Program or explore other Well Wisconsin resources focused on healthy living, including weight management, nutrition, and physical activity. For more information or assistance in registering for these programs, members can contact WebMD at 1-800-821-6591.

Explore Additional Diabetes Support Programs

Members are also encouraged to consult their health plans or healthcare providers for information about other diabetes self-management programs. These resources can offer valuable support for managing the condition and improving overall well-being.

Fitness Classes and Webinars for a Healthier Lifestyle

In line with National Diabetes Month, Well Wisconsin offers virtual fitness classes focused on building core strength and stability. In December, participants can enjoy yin yoga sessions. These classes, along with other health-related webinars such as “Understanding Seasonal Affective Disorder,” are available for registration. All classes and webinars are recorded and can be accessed through the online library, making it easier for members to participate at their convenience.

By taking proactive steps in diabetes management and engaging in healthy lifestyle practices, individuals can significantly improve their quality of life. For more information on these programs and how to get involved, members should reach out to the resources provided.
