The Delhi government is planning to create a Centre of Excellence in Diabetes and Endocrinology to address the growing number of residents suffering from metabolic disorders.
Officials confirmed that the proposed centre will focus on promoting yoga, lifestyle changes, and dietary adjustments to manage diabetes, as well as conducting research on the disease. The centre will also provide advanced medical care and support for economically disadvantaged sections of society.
The initiative aims to expand upon the existing Centre for Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Metabolism at Guru Teg Bahadur (GTB) Hospital. The new centre, which carries an estimated cost of Rs 17 crore, has been recommended by a committee from the Department of Health and Family Welfare and is now awaiting approval from the Delhi Cabinet.
Once approved, the new facility will be the first government-run institution of its kind in the country, offering state-of-the-art treatment and referral services to underprivileged patients.
The proposal for the Centre of Excellence is set to be presented to Delhi’s Chief Minister, Rekha Gupta, for final approval.
The Health Department’s proposal highlights the significant impact the new institute will have on healthcare services in the city. “The creation of this institute will provide world-class referral services in a critical area of healthcare, adding immense value to the services already offered by Delhi’s hospitals,” the proposal states.
