A leading neurologist has shared insights on a supplement that may significantly boost brain health and potentially reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. According to Dr. Alejandro Andersson, Director of the Buenos Aires Institute of Neurology, magnesium is essential for optimal cognitive function and offers numerous neurological benefits, including regulating brain-body communication, reducing neuroinflammation, and protecting neuronal cells from degeneration.

Magnesium supplements, particularly magnesium threonate, have garnered attention for their ability to cross the blood-brain barrier, which is a challenge for many other forms of magnesium. This unique property allows magnesium threonate to directly benefit the central nervous system, providing promising effects on brain health.

Dr. Andersson advocates for magnesium threonate due to its effectiveness in elevating brain magnesium levels. Research supports its cognitive benefits, with a 2020 study published in BMC Neuroscience showing how the supplement enhances brain cell health and preserves cognitive function in animals. Further studies, including one in 2024, revealed that magnesium-L-threonate may reduce Alzheimer’s-related symptoms in mice.

While magnesium supplements are widely available and can be introduced through diet, topical lotions, or oral pills, experts stress the importance of following safety guidelines. The NHS recommends a daily magnesium intake not exceeding 400mg to avoid potential side effects such as diarrhea. Furthermore, while the benefits of magnesium threonate are compelling, more research is needed to understand the long-term effects of high doses.

For those considering adding magnesium threonate to their daily routine, it’s crucial to consult with a healthcare provider to ensure proper use and dosage.
