Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS)

Fasting blood sugar refers to the glucose level in the blood after an individual has not eaten or drunk anything (except water) for at least 8 hours. This is typically measured in the morning before breakfast.

Normal Range: 70 to 99 mg/dL (3.9 to 5.5 mmol/L)

Prediabetes (Impaired Fasting Glucose): 100 to 125 mg/dL (5.6 to 6.9 mmol/L)

Diabetes: 126 mg/dL (7.0 mmol/L) or higher on two separate occasions.

A fasting blood sugar level between 100 and 125 mg/dL is classified as prediabetes, a condition where blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not yet high enough to be classified as diabetes. A fasting blood sugar level of 126 mg/dL or higher on two separate tests typically confirms a diagnosis of diabetes.

Postprandial Blood Sugar

Postprandial blood sugar refers to the glucose level measured 2 hours after eating a meal. Normally, the body will regulate the rise in blood glucose following food intake.

Normal Range (2 hours after eating): Less than 140 mg/dL (7.8 mmol/L)

Prediabetes: 140 to 199 mg/dL (7.8 to 11.0 mmol/L)

Diabetes: 200 mg/dL (11.1 mmol/L) or higher.

A blood glucose level of 200 mg/dL or higher two hours after eating may indicate diabetes, especially if it is accompanied by symptoms such as increased thirst, frequent urination, and fatigue.

Random Blood Sugar Test

A random blood sugar test measures blood glucose levels at any time of the day, regardless of when the person last ate. It is less specific than a fasting blood sugar test but can be useful for quickly identifying high blood sugar levels.

Normal Range: Less than 140 mg/dL (7.8 mmol/L)

Diabetes: 200 mg/dL (11.1 mmol/L) or higher, especially if symptoms of diabetes are present.

A random blood sugar level of 200 mg/dL or higher, along with symptoms like excessive thirst, frequent urination, and blurry vision, can indicate diabetes.

Hemoglobin A1c Test

The hemoglobin A1c test measures the average blood glucose levels over the past 2 to 3 months. Unlike other tests, this test does not require fasting and is a useful long-term indicator of blood sugar control. It measures the percentage of hemoglobin (a protein in red blood cells) that has glucose attached to it. The higher the blood sugar levels, the greater the percentage of hemoglobin that is glycated (coated with glucose).

Normal Range: Below 5.7%

Prediabetes: 5.7% to 6.4%

Diabetes: 6.5% or higher.

An A1c level of 6.5% or higher indicates that a person has diabetes. This test is commonly used to diagnose diabetes and to monitor long-term blood glucose control.

Factors That Affect Blood Sugar Levels

Several factors influence blood sugar levels, and understanding them is critical for both preventing and managing diabetes. Some of the primary factors that can influence blood glucose levels include:

Blood sugar levels that fall outside the normal range can have serious consequences.
