Newfoundland and Labrador is expanding its Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) Program to include all residents living with type 1 diabetes, as part of its broader plan to become “Canada’s healthiest province.”
Health Minister Krista Lynn Howell announced that approximately 4,600 people will benefit from the program, which will help them manage their blood glucose levels and lower the financial burden of diabetes care.
Continuous Glucose Monitors are wearable devices that track blood sugar levels in real time. Patients can access this information through their smartphones, allowing for easier, more accurate monitoring without the need for finger pricks.
Eligibility for financial support under the program will be assessed using the same income-based criteria as the province’s Insulin Pump Program.
“All individuals currently enrolled in the NL Insulin Pump Program will also receive coverage for CGMs,” Howell confirmed. She emphasized that the initiative is a key part of the government’s efforts to improve public health across the province.
The CGM program expansion is set to begin this fall. Those who meet both medical and income requirements will be eligible for full or partial funding.
Health Minister Howell and endocrinologist Dr. Zaina Albalawi are scheduled to speak further about the expansion at a press event at the Confederation Building.
